Under the leadership of Eng. Essam El-Naggar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the General Authority for Export and Import Control (GAEIC): A Model of Institutional Integration in Environmental Protection and Supporting Sustainable Development. In a move that reflects the pioneering national role of the GAEIC Center of Excellence in supporting the state's efforts to achieve a sustainable future, and reaffirms its commitment to Egypt's Vision 2030, the Authority organized a specialized workshop entitled "Tightening Control over Substances Subject to the Montreal Protocol and its Various Amendments." The workshop was held in cooperation with: The Ozone Unit at the Ministry of Environment The Central Administration for Industrial Imports The General Administration for Technical Consultations at the Center of Excellence The General Administration for Talent Development and Capacity Building at the Central Administration for Human Resources The workshop witnessed a distinguished attendance of a large number of trainees and specialists, and came to reflect the concerted efforts of various state institutions to protect the ozone layer, enhance environmental awareness, and reduce the risks of harmful chemicals. This step affirms the Authority's commitment to developing the skills of specialists and those interested in the field of controlling chemicals that affect the ozone layer. This workshop highlights the vital role the Authority plays in protecting the environment by enhancing knowledge and developing the regulatory expertise of employees in relevant agencies. It also reflects the fruitful cooperation between the General Authority for Export and Import Control and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) with the aim of protecting our planet and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations. 🎯 #Center_of_Excellence... A technical lever for developing national capabilities During the opening speech, Engineer #Essam_Elnaggar, Chairman of the #General_Authority_for_Export_and_Import_Control, emphasized the pivotal role played by the Authority's Center of Excellence in developing technical skills and enhancing competencies in the fields of technical and environmental control. He emphasized that this center is a specialized scientific platform for exchanging expertise and training personnel to serve Egypt's international commitments under environmental agreements. He added that the Authority possesses an integrated system of specialized technical laboratories, which are among the most modern and advanced in the region and constitute an essential part of Egypt's technical control infrastructure. These laboratories play an active role in ensuring product quality and compliance with standard specifications, both in export and import operations. This contributes to protecting the local market and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian exports. 🧪 Advanced laboratories for ozone protection and emissions reduction He explained that the Authority's Freon testing laboratories are a key pillar in the country's efforts to phase out ozone-depleting substances. They conduct rigorous testing of cooling devices to ensure their compliance with environmental standards and energy efficiency requirements, in line with the national drive toward green transformation and emissions reduction. 🤝 Effective institutional cooperation for a safe future Al-Najjar emphasized that this workshop is the culmination of fruitful cooperation with the Ozone Unit at the Ministry of Environment and represents the beginning of a series of specialized workshops aimed at deepening technical understanding, developing national capabilities, and adhering to international standards in dealing with substances that affect the environment. 🌱 Towards a Safe Environment and a Sustainable Economy With this integrated model of institutional coordination and technical development, the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC) continues to fulfill its national role in protecting the environment, not only as a regulatory body, but also as an effective driver of sustainable development in Egypt and a buffer against global environmental changes, ensuring a safe future for future generations. The workshop was held at the Center of Excellence at the GOEIC branches in Alexandria, Suez, and 6th of October City, as well as at the Center of Excellence at the GOEIC's headquarters. 📚 About the Montreal Protocol The Montreal Protocol is an international agreement signed in 1987 to limit the production and consumption of substances that deplete the ozone layer, the layer that protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. This protocol is considered one of the most successful global environmental agreements, having significantly contributed to reducing the use of ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. Almost all countries in the world have joined it, including Egypt, which has committed to implementing the provisions of the Protocol and its successive amendments by implementing national programs to phase out these substances. The Protocol is updated periodically, and one of its most notable amendments was the 2016 Kigali Amendment, which aimed to limit the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which have a significant global warming effect, even though they do not directly affect the ozone layer. The Protocol represents a successful model of joint international environmental action. It has helped save millions of lives from UV-related illnesses, contributed to the gradual restoration of the ozone layer, and is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and efforts to combat climate change.
